What is quercetin? How does it assist with gut health? In this post, we will discuss all the benefits of using quercetin and how you can use it! Let us at Crohn’s & Colitis Lifestyle offer our tips on this awesome supplement!

Quercetin and the gut-how it can benefit your body!

What is Quercetin?

Quercetin is one of the most bioactive flavonoids and helps maintain mast cell function, and originates from various fruits and veggies! (see below)

It is a powerful antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties! It’s often used for various heart conditions or as a potential form of treatment for cancer (consult a healthcare professional if you are considering taking this.)

Quercetin supplements are usually formulated to help as potential support to cellular, cardiometabolic, and immune health and in turn, can help with possible gut issues.

See where Quercetin originates from:

Fruits and vegetables are the primary dietary sources of quercetin, particularly citrus fruits, apples, onions, parsley, sage, tea, and red wine. Olive oil, grapes, dark cherries, and dark berries such as blueberries, blackberries, and bilberries are also high in quercetin and other flavonoids.

A quick note on Mast Cells and Quercetin

As previously mentioned, quercetin can help with mast cells. Mast cells are directly related to inflammation as they are a type of cell that is found in connective tissue in the body. They can be activated and released (by pathogens, allergies, and more) thereby changing inflammatory markers.

So why do mast cells come into play with the gut and how can quercetin help?

Mast cells can be responsible for leaky gut, according to new research. Mast cells in the gut can therefore affect intestinal permeability. So if diet, stress, trauma, or other external factors are making the mast cells weak or firing them at large, they then cannot perform the job of keeping the gut strong and tight.

By supplementing with quercetin, it can potentially help to stabilize the mast cells.

Read the science on this below

“In vitro studies have shown that quercetin stabilizes the membranes of mast cells and reduces the release of preformed histamine. In animal models, quercetin is able to suppress anaphylactic responses in sensitized rats, and it inhibits asthmatic inflammation in guinea pigs and rats.”

Quercetin-its impact on the Gut

Now that we have a little background on quercetin, let’s get into its benefits for the gut!

Take a peek at what happens when it enters the body:

“Upon absorption in the small intestine, quercetin is metabolized immediately by enzymes in the epithelial cells and further metabolized by the liver.”

Source: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/nursing-and-health-professions/quercetin

So as it enters the body it immediately interacts with the small intestine.

This direct gut interaction could help improve the microbiome or gut imbalances. Its main benefit is to strengthen the tight junctures! This is a huge benefit for Crohn’s & Colitis because those barriers are usually compromised and therefore result in ulcers, fistulas, fissures, bleeding, and all sorts of disorders.

Notice the interaction of quercetin in the gut:

“Quercetin supplementation generated a great impact on gut microbiota composition at different taxonomic levels, attenuating Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and inhibiting the growth of bacterial species previously associated to diet-induced obesity (Erysipelotrichaceae, Bacillus, Eubacterium cylindroides). Overall, the administration of quercetin was found to be effective in lessening HFS-diet-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis. In contrast, trans-resveratrol supplementation alone or in combination with quercetin scarcely modified the profile of gut bacteria but acted at the intestinal level, altering the mRNA expression of tight-junction proteins and inflammation-associated genes.”

Gut dysbiosis is in reference to an unbalanced microbiota terrain. So not only can quercetin possibly assist with strengthening the gut lining but could potentially improve the diversity in our guts!

Check out the other study below on gut diversity and quercetin.

“The present study suggests that quercetin affects the progress of microbiota-associated diseases. Notably, quercetin supplementation increased gut microbial diversity, which may improve gut protection.”

Quercetin and allergies

Allergies can be so irritating and frustrating. So in addition to gut health, quercetin has been a tried and true treatment for allergies.

One of our CCL clients has used it to treat her chronic severe allergies. She was suffering from asthma, nasal polyps, sinusitis and allergies in addition to her gut disorder. She began taking high doses of quercetin daily and things began clearing up rather quickly!

See how it affects allergies:

“Most data supporting the role of quercetin in attenuating allergic reactivity have been obtained from in vitro studies, as well as from animal models of allergic disease.
Quercetin must be used as a preventative—taken before allergen exposure. Thus the activity of quercetin is similar to that of cromolyn, a drug that is often prescribed for allergy and asthma prophylaxis (see later). Quercetin also inhibits the production of enzymes responsible for manufacturing the potent leukotrienes. Practitioners usually recommend that quercetin be used regularly during an individual’s entire allergy season, or year-round for those with perennial allergies.”

Jini at Listen To Your Gut recommends different options for nose bleeds and seasonal allergies.

As mentioned in the above material, it can be taken as prevention or in acute allergies. The dosage depends but often if severe allergies are present, some higher doses may be necessary so consult a professional before use.

How members at CCL have used this product

One of our clients loved using quercetin. This client (like many of ours) used it mainly to increase the epithelial barrier. This particular client used it both through enema and orally on a regular basis. This helped him to manage and heal his mucosal lining, by strengthening it.

The fact quercetin is so versatile is amazing! Even in capsule form you can easily open the capsule and dump it onto an enema, getting direct supplementation to the colon if that is the problem area.
