Let us at Crohn’s & Colitis Lifestyle share this Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe with you.
At CCL we created something called food philosophy. If you are unfamiliar with it, it’s a GAME CHANGER practice!
Food Philosophy: To look at ANY plate of food (or drink) and assess its risk to your personal needs.
In short, this technique helps you to assess each plate you have in front of you. You can look at risk factors and take proactive measures.
What truly matters is your Food Philosophy fits your unique needs to experience a healing response.
What is so great about the strategies we offer at CCL is that you should be able to properly digest and eat anything when your gut is healed. No restriction. So when your microbiome is in proper balance it can handle any food!
A Simple Example to Illustrate Food Philosophy
We would like to use a hypothetical example using this recipe to explain how important food philosophy is.
Here is an example of people with active IBD: Let’s say that 50% of people with active IBD who try this recipe could do well with this recipe and 50% of them don’t. Of those who don’t have IBD 95% of them will probably do well on this recipe and 5% won’t. Keep in mind this would be for any given recipe, not just this one.
This play on numbers (just an example) teaches us that to have a healthy gut we need to build the ability to handle a variety of foods!
So the question to ask yourself is: if you don’t tolerate a certain food as well, ask why? And how can I build my gut to avoid a negative reaction in the future?
This is how so many of our clients have had success eating a wide variety after completing our program!

Today’s recipe is taken from the lovely Love and Lemons. We thought since it’s getting colder outside, a nice hot beverage option that’s gut friendly would be just the trick!
We loved the idea of this recipe and the fact that the ingredients are gut-friendly. Not to mention that the texture is appropriate for sensitive and healing tummies! So we decided to show this recipe as a great option for gut-friendly recipes, and added our two scents on it with additional gut tips!
Please note people with healthy guts can handle this recipe!
Each person’s gut healing journey goes at different paces, so our recipe suggestions are just general ideas, but please cater them (the ingredients, how they are cooked, etc..) to your OWN gut and what your professional health care team or our awesome coaches recommend! 🙂

Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make this pumpkin spice latte recipe:
1) Pumpkin, of course! A few tablespoons of canned organic pumpkin puree enhance the latte’s creamy texture and add essential pumpkin flavor.
2) Espresso, cold brew, or coffee – They use 2 shots of espresso or a half cup of either type of coffee. (omit completely and just make this a non-caffeinated latte if your tummy can not handle coffee)
3) *This is the only coffee we recommend! So if you decide to use coffee in this beverage, we recommend the above coffee. It’s the only organic, chemical-free, low acid, mycotoxin-free coffee that is gut friendly.
4) Milk – Any type you like! I typically use almond milk because it’s what I keep on hand, but oat milk and regular milk are also great. (If dairy bothers you opt for one of the nut milk options out there, such as the above or even coconut milk)
5) Maple syrup – It sweetens the latte and adds delicious maple flavor.
6) Pumpkin pie spice – I make my own with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and ground cloves. It gives this latte the perfect “pumpkin spice” taste!
7) Vanilla extract – For warm depth of flavor.
8) And a pinch of sea salt – To make all the flavors pop!
I love that you don’t need any special equipment to make this recipe–no espresso machine, no milk frother–just a small saucepan and a whisk!
Heat the milk, espresso, maple syrup, pumpkin puree, vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, and salt in the saucepan over low heat. Whisk until everything is well combined and heated through. That’s it!
Pour your PSL into a mug. Feel free to top with whipped cream or coconut whipped cream, cinnamon sticks, and an extra dusting of pumpkin pie spice, if you like, or enjoy the latte on its own.
In this section, we provide you with simple takeaway tips and a quick reference guide from us so that you can implement this in your daily health regimen!
